The stone guide

What is moonstone?

Moonstone is a gemstone from the feldspar family, formed in thin layers that catch and scatter light. That scattering creates its famous glow, a soft sheen that drifts across the stone as it moves, known as adularescence. The finest moonstone comes from Sri Lanka and India. In Arabic it is called حجر القمر, the stone of the moon, and the Romans believed it was made of moonlight itself.

Blue and white moonstone

White moonstone is milky and calm, while blue moonstone shows a bright blue flash as the light turns. Many beads carry both: a pale body with a blue glow that seems to sit just under the surface. Set in moonstone silver jewellery, that glow looks cooler and brighter still.

Moonstone meaning and benefits

Moonstone is the birthstone of June. In crystal traditions it is the stone of new beginnings, worn for intuition, calm and safe travel, and long linked with the moon and its cycles. These are traditional meanings rather than medical claims, and they are why moonstone is so often given to mark a new chapter.

How to care for moonstone

Moonstone is fairly hard but can chip if knocked. Clean it with mild soapy water and a soft cloth, dry it well, and store it apart from harder stones.
