The stone guide

What is jade stone?

Jade is the name given to two minerals, nephrite and jadeite. Both are made of tightly interlocked crystals, which makes them among the toughest stones in the world. In Arabic it is known as al-jad (الجاد). China has carved jade for more than 5,000 years and calls it "the stone of heaven", and New Zealand's Māori treasure it as pounamu. The jade in our pieces is made from jade dust material.

The colour of jade

Green jade is the most famous, ranging from pale celadon to deep forest green. Jade also occurs in white, lavender, yellow and black, but rich green remains the colour most sought after in jade jewellery.

Jade stone meaning and benefits

Across many cultures jade has long been associated with wisdom, prosperity, harmony and good fortune. It is traditionally linked with Taurus, Libra and Aries, and is often given to mark new beginnings. These are traditional meanings rather than medical claims.

How to care for jade

Jade is tough but can still be scratched by harder stones, so store it on its own in its pouch. Wipe it with a soft cloth, or wash it briefly in lukewarm water with mild soap and dry it at once. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals. Put on perfume before your jewellery, and keep gold-plated pieces and stretch cords away from water.
