The stone guide

What is malachite?

Malachite is a natural copper mineral, and copper gives the stone its colour. It forms in layers inside copper deposits, mostly in Africa and the Ural Mountains of Russia. Each malachite stone shows its own pattern of rings and bands, so no two beads are ever the same. In Arabic it is called ملكيت. Its name comes from the Greek for the mallow leaf, whose green it matches.

The colour of malachite

Malachite green runs from pale mint to deep forest green, often in a single bead. That colour is why the French call it vert malachite. The ancient Egyptians ground it into pigment for jewellery and eye paint, and the Russian tsars lined an entire palace hall with it.

Malachite meaning and benefits

In crystal traditions, malachite is known as the stone of transformation. It is worn for protection, for courage in times of change and for balance. These are traditional meanings rather than medical claims, and they are part of why malachite is so often chosen as a gift.

How to care for malachite

Malachite is a soft gemstone. Wipe it with a dry cloth, and keep it away from water, perfume and household sprays.
